Care:

Nui Organics are members of GINETEX – the International Association for Textile Care Labelling. We use their 'Clevercare' garment care symbol’s on our clothing to help you reduce your environmental impact when caring for your clothing.

Laundry alone accounts for approx. 30% of the carbon footprint of clothing. The most effective way in which you can reduce this is to change the way you care for them. And for the most part less means more. Don’t wash too often, reduce your wash temperature. Do you really need to tumble dry, iron or dryclean that shirt?

Nui wool garments are easy to care for and designed to last for years, making it better for your wallet and the planet. Here are a few tips to maintain maximum longevity. It's not as hard as it sounds. Here's how…

1. Only wash as needed.

Merino wool is stain-resistant, odor-resistant, resilient, anti-bacterial, and breathable and has the amazing ability of being able to clean itself. This means it only needs to be aired out between washings to keep it fresh. Especially for your knit sweaters, it is often enough to air them outside instead of washing.

2. Wash on a low temperature

In general, most of our wool garments can be washed in a machine in a water temperature 40°C or less. Preferably, use the wool or delicate cycle. For longevity, and because machine cold water settings can vary greatly, hand washing is our preferred method of washing wool, and always hand wash for our Nui knits. Wool cannot stand significant fluctuations in temperature without shrinking so make sure you wash and rinse at the same temperature.

3. Use a detergent made for wool

Regular laundry detergent contains enzymes that will damage wool so whether hand or machine washing, always use a detergent that is designed to wash wool.

4. Do not soak or wring

If you leave your wool to soak in water it will ruin the wool. Right after washing (hand or machine) get it out to dry on a line or drying rack. Don’t wring excess water out of your wool, this will twist the fibres and put stress on the seams. You can gently press excess water out between a couple of towels before drying, but the more gentle you are to your favorite sweater during washing the more it will love you back for years to come.

5. Dry flat out of direct sunlight

Your merino thermals, merino silk, merino Tencel and all of our light merino can be hung on the line, and will literally dry in minutes. Best practice for our fully-fashioned knits however is to dry flat out of direct sunlight.

Hope that these quick wool washing tips are useful. For best results, please always refer to your garment care label for specific washing instructions.

Pilling

Pilling refers to the tiny wool 'balls' or fuzz that may form on your wool garments with washing and wearing. It is caused by agitation and causes the short fibers to migrate to the surface.

Pilling can easily be removed with a 'de-pilling' comb and once removed they will generally stop forming after one or two washes.
